Christian Outreach through Bible Distribution

We are very thankful for the many Bibles that came in from our friends and partnersin the US. Under the (BYOB) Bring Your Old Bible program, we received many beautiful Bibles to give to those who had none. Initially the Bibles seemed so many that they would not run out, but we soon found out that the need way surpassed the supply. As the stock of Bibles dwindled, our partners in the field continually wrote to us requesting for more Bibles.  Because we were encouraged by the positive impact of Bible distribution within the local churches, we sent out an appeal for more Bibles.

Last year we were so happy to receive a whole shipment of over 29,000 Bibles. They came in all shapes, sizes, colors and versions. It was a blessing to see boxes full of brand new NIV Study Bibles. Best of all there were the Bibles that had belonged to families and individuals, which bore the names of their previous owners on the inside. The special thing about this is that every recipient of these Bibles will be praying each day, for the person whose name appears in it.

 Supporting Bible study

Through the work of CMA’s Outreach ministry we want to encourage spiritual growth within churches, through the introduction of Bible study groups.  Every time we do follow up on these Bible study groups, there is always a noticeable lack of Bibles among the group members. CMA therefore seeks to promote the growth of church ministries, by providing faithful individuals with Bibles, which they will use as a tool to form Bible study groups in their local community. So far we have given thousands of Bibles to churches in project areas like South Sudan, Maasailand, Kerio Valley and slum churches in Nairobi.

Church Leaders

A very important group of people in the growth of rural evangelism, are the pastors and lay leaders in the church. Many pastors and lay leaders demonstrate a great deal of enthusiasm in their work to help expand the church ministry in their regions. Quite often they lead people to the Lord, and encourage others without the use of a proper Bible. Through the CMA Outreach ministry, many of the church leaders associated in working with us have been given reference Bibles to us in their ministry. Pastor John Obuyi, said the American Standard Version Bible he received has made his preaching easier, since he doesn’t have to guess the references because he always has them handy.

Bibles for the youth

During school holiday’s, the CMA Outreach team has introduced many interesting activities to keep the youth of Mt. Elgon, Nyanza, Kipkelion, and Kerio Valley busy. The Youth camps and Vacation Bible Schools have proven to be a great attraction in all the regions they are based in. Everybody realizes the importance of teaching the young children to grow up with a solid foundation based on the Word of God. Over the one - week activities these children are taught a lot of scripture, which includes learning a new memory verse each day of the week. Some children are so good at learning their memory verses, and they are able to recite every verse they learned during the week.

As a way of encouraging all the children who excel in various activities like memory verses, singing, drama and artwork we like to present them with special presents. The best present you can give any child is the Word of God, and to the little children we give out New Testament Bibles and Bible storybooks. The older children receive a complete Bible to treasure as their own.

Bibles for the Unreached People

In the region of Mt. Elgon, which is located near the border on the western side of Kenya, you will find the local people there who are known as the Sabaots. The Sabaots have been classified as unreached people in a past survey done by Daystar University. They are mainly pastoralists who spend most of their days searching for good grazing areas for their livestock.

Through the work of the Bible Translation and Literacy ministry, the Sabaot people now have a Bible in their own language. They can now enjoy reading the New Testament, and 4 books from the Old Testament.

With the gracious support of friends in the US, CMA was able to buy and distribute the Sabaot Bibles to the local people in September. There was a lot of excitement in the air as we gave out a total of 600 Bibles to the local church leaders. The men, women and youth who received Bibles, have now started more than 11 Bible Study groups in the area.

We also left various adult literacy materials, which will be used as relevant tools to teach the adult literacy classes. As the Sabaot people learn the Word of God, they will also learn how to read and write
.

Nuer Bibles

South Sudan is a harsh land where the people live in very sad conditions. Right now at our CMA base in Keew, the people often face many trials like, hunger, insecurity and disease. As one gets to meet and talk with the local church leaders you begin to realize that there is a serious type of hunger the people have. Scriptural hunger is very evident in Keew for there were no Bibles until CMA took some in this year. The Bibles, which are in their native language called Nuer, were received with great joy and thanksgiving. We delivered even more Bibles in November, when our visitors from the USA went up on a mission trip.

Our visitors Bob, Jody and Dave held some Bible study classes, with the local church leaders. This was the first time that any such training had been done in Keew, and most of the participants arrived without Bibles. The training went very well, and the participants were able to read from the Old Testament for the first time. “It was very good and everyone is happy because we were taught the Word of God, and we heard new news we had never heard before,” said evangelist John Tut, the leader of a local Church, about the Bible study classes.

Not all the people in Keew are literate, and the local evangelists will be entrusted with the job of explaining the Bible to others. “Even those who don’t know how to read and write, they will understand when we read the Bible to them,” said Evangelist William Duoth.

Taking the Word to the children of Maasailand

At the bottom of the Rift Valley are stretches of plains where you find Zebras grazing alongside Maasai cattle. Hidden there is a Church sponsored school, called Kipeto Primary School. The school has a total of 168 children in attendance.

November was truly a busy time for Jacob Auma, as he drove around the rolling plains of Maasailand delivering God’s word to the students. At Kipeto, Inyonyori and Oltepesi Primary schools, the teachers and students were receiving Bibles for the first time.  All they could say was, ‘e sidai, e sidai’ (they are good, good).

The teachers were highly encouraged when they received new Bibles to use in their Christian Religious Education classes. Before the teachers only had one Bible to share among them, and they were so glad that there were given different versions of the Bibles.

In total CMA delivered 287 Bibles in 4 schools, and this has given many children a chance to discover what God has to say to them.

Taking the Word to the Church’s of Maasailand

CMA has developed numerous partnerships with many churches within Maasailand. The pastors and evangelists in these churches work with us to plant churches, to do evangelism, and to distribute Bibles among other ministries.

Last year history was made when the members of the Roho Israel Church, fellowshipped with the believers from other churches during CMA’s Lay Leaders training seminar held in Maasailand. We were happy to welcome them, and through their participation we were able to give them 12 Bibles to use in their Church. The 39-member church has now started prayer meetings, and they are also holding Bible study lessons. CMA is happy to see their interest in being a part of our outreach ministry, and we will continue to encourage them as they seek to grow in their faith.

Taking the Word to Muslims

Moyale District is an arid area located in the northern part of Kenya. Pastor Aila Tasse has chosen to work in this challenging environment, to reach the unreached people in his area of origin.

Through the Evangelical Christian Church located almost on the Kenya – Ethiopia border, he is sharing the Good News with the large Muslim community there. He is also reaching the unreached people of the Borana, Gabra, Sakuye, Rendille, Burji and Samburu tribes, found in Marsabit and Moyale Districts.

“I’ve been doing the outreach work since 1993 to today, and it has been tough because of a lot of persecution from Muslims. Some of our believers have been stoned and their houses have been burnt,” he says, about his ministry which stretches out to Ethiopia, an area purported to be 98% Islamized.

In an effort to help the people in Northern Kenya, and the Ethiopian believers, CMA gave 60 Bibles to the Timothy Training Institute library services - which Pastor Tasse heads. “There are no library services in Moyale, and people have no access to Bibles,” says Pastor Tasse. Today through his partnership with CMA, “those who really want to read the Bible, and can’t afford them can now read,” he says happily.

On the 10th of November, the Timothy Training Institute held a graduation for church leaders and evangelists. It was a joyful occasion where each one of the 38 graduates received a brand new NIV Study Bible from CMA. Northern Kenya has 13 of the 22 unreached peoples in Kenya, and with the help of the NIV Bibles, the graduates can now go out and reach these people for Christ!

Letters of appreciation

Through our Bible distribution efforts we have been receiving so many thank you letters from all over the country. Teachers, evangelists, pastors, individuals and headmasters, have all written to express their gratitude for the Bibles that have been placed in their hands. Here is what one of them had to say:

Amen Christian Outreach Ministry

"On behalf of the Amen Christian Outreach Ministry, I would like to acknowledge the receipt of Bibles from Christian Mission Aid offices in Nairobi.

After a careful consideration and prayer, we distributed the Bibles among church members in two categories. The first category consisted of Pastors and Church leaders, thirty in number, who desperately needed appropriate Bibles for teachings and Evangelism. We gave them an NIV Study Bible, which was very much appreciated, with touching testimonies and comments on what owning such a unique type of a Bible meant to them individually, and their congregations, and how it would enhance their personal walk with the Lord.

The second category consisted of Newly born-again believers, who had registered with the church for Bible study classes. We gave out almost 50 used Bibles for this purpose and encouraged them to own them and personalize them. It is amazing just how hungry people are for good Bibles for study and reading purposes.

Some of the testimonies we received are briefly summarized below:

Pastor John Muiruri: “It is exactly three days since I prayed and wished I had a good NIV Study Bible. I have seen God answering my prayers, and I thank God for a good Bible.”

Brother Joseph Odhiambo: “I didn’t believe it when I saw my younger brother, who was never interested in the Bible, developing a keen in reading my new Bible, this is unbelievable, he is changing right before my eyes, I thank God, and I know that now he will get to know the Lord as Savior!”

Sister Eunice: “I cannot believe it! Surely God is never too late, I have always wished to have a Study Bible, I am glad that God has finally answered my prayer, thank you Jesus!”

On behalf of the people we have given Bibles to, we would like to appreciate this assistance from Christian Mission Aid."
